Linen Care Guide

Linen is valued for its breathability, texture and natural ease. Made from flax fibres, it has a cool, dry hand feel and a light structure that works particularly well in warm weather. Creasing is part of its character, but with the right care linen softens beautifully over time while retaining its distinctive look.

Washing

  • Wash cool or lukewarm: use water at 30°C or below to help protect the fabric and minimise unnecessary stress on the fibres.
  • Choose a gentle cycle: a gentler wash is usually best, especially for lighter or more delicate linen pieces. Hand washing is also a safe option.
  • Use a mild detergent: choose a gentle detergent and avoid bleach, which can weaken the fibres over time.

Drying

  • Air dry where possible: hang or lay flat to dry naturally, smoothing the fabric out by hand to help reduce heavy creasing.
  • Avoid harsh heat: prolonged direct sun can encourage fading, and over-drying can make linen feel brittle.
  • Tumble dry with care: if needed, use a low setting and remove while still slightly damp.

Removing Wrinkles

  • Iron while damp: linen responds best to ironing when there is still a little moisture in the fabric. Use a medium heat with steam for smoother results.
  • Steam as an alternative: a steamer is a gentler option, particularly for lighter or more softly structured garments.

Stain Removal

  • Act quickly: blot stains gently with a clean cloth and cold water to help stop them setting.
  • Clean gently: use a mild detergent and dab rather than scrub, as repeated abrasion can roughen the surface of the fabric.

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place: fold neatly to avoid sharp creases, or hang woven pieces carefully if preferred. Avoid plastic storage for long periods, as it can trap moisture.
