Manufacturing & Sustainability
At Far Afield, sustainability starts with how our clothes are made and who makes them. We work closely with trusted manufacturing partners, choose lower-impact materials where possible, and focus on making garments with a long life in mind. From ethical production and responsible fabric choices to packaging and transport, we aim to make considered decisions at every stage.
Ethical Manufacturing and Supply Chain
We work with trusted factories in Sri Lanka, India, Turkey, Portugal and the UK, visiting them regularly and maintaining close relationships with the people behind our production. Safe working conditions, fair wages and adult-only labour are non-negotiable, and all partner factories are required to meet ILO standards. By embedding Human Rights Due Diligence into our process, we aim to ensure that everyone involved in making our garments is treated fairly and respectfully.
You can read more about one of these relationships in our A Close-Knit Relationship journal feature.
Organic Cotton, Recycled Fabrics and Lower-Impact Materials
Material choice plays a central role in our approach. We use GOTS-certified organic cotton across much of our range, alongside Global Recycled Standard certified textiles and Better Cotton, which supports more responsible cotton farming practices.
Beyond cotton, we also work with materials such as Tencel™, a biodegradable fibre made in a closed-loop process that minimises waste and water us, as well as non-mulesed wool and OEKO-TEX certified yarns in our knitwear. Our swimwear uses recycled polyester made from post-consumer plastic bottles. Across production, we aim to avoid harmful chemicals and work with manufacturers who manage waste responsibly and in line with environmental regulations.

Designed for Longevity
Sustainability is not only about materials – it is also about making clothes that last. We focus on quality construction, durable fabrics and considered design so our garments can be worn often and kept in circulation for longer. Looking after them properly matters too – our Care Guide has practical advice on washing, drying and storing garments to help extend their life.
Responsible Packaging and Waste Reduction
We use biodegradable and compostable product packaging from TIPA®, and ship orders in 100% recycled and recyclable kraft paper bags. Where possible, we have also removed plastic from trims and buttons, opting instead for natural alternatives such as mother of pearl, shell, wood and corozo. Reducing waste across production, packaging and logistics remains an ongoing priority.
Our Ongoing Approach to Sustainability
We do not see sustainability as a fixed claim or finished goal. It is an ongoing process of refinement – from increasing sea freight over air where possible, to improving material choices and continuing to question how we can do better. We know there is always more work to do, and we remain committed to making thoughtful, transparent decisions as we go.
