Trouser Fit Guide

Trouser fits can look similar on a rail and very different once they’re on. This guide breaks down the main Far Afield trouser shapes in the current range, with notes on rise, leg shape, length and waistband. You can also browse our wider men’s trousers collection, explore our Fundamentals range, or head to our open-collar shirts and linen shirts for easy summer pairings.

Trouser Fit 01

Dekk Trouser

A slightly cropped trouser with a gentle taper and a clean shape through the leg.

Drawing on naval and fisherman workwear, the Dekk Trouser is cut with a clean shape through the seat and thigh, then tapers gently towards the hem. The slightly cropped length keeps the silhouette tidy, while the flat-front waistband gives it a neater look from the front than a standard drawstring trouser.

Made from 300gsm cotton–hemp canvas, it has enough structure to hold its shape but still feels breathable on the body. If you want something tapered and slightly cropped, this is the one to look at. You can browse both colourways below, or explore the wider trouser collection for more relaxed and workwear-informed shapes.

Trouser Fit 02

Double Pleated Trouser

A high-rise linen trouser with double pleats, a wide leg and a cropped finish.

The Double Pleated Trouser is cut with a high rise, a cropped length and a wide leg. The double forward pleats add room through the top block, while the shorter length keeps the shape light and easy to wear.

Made from 270gsm linen, it is breathable, lightly structured and well suited to warmer weather. This is a wide-leg summer trouser rather than a traditional tailored one, and it works well with sandals, loafers, open-collar shirts and lighter knitwear. If you want a cropped trouser with a fuller leg, this is the clearest option of the three. It also pairs naturally with our linen shirts, open-collar shirts and broader summer trouser offering.

Trouser Fit 03

Summerhouse Trouser

An easy straight-leg trouser with a drawstring waist and a full-length finish.

The Summerhouse Trouser is built on a straightforward straight-leg shape with a mid rise and an elasticated waistband. The leg falls cleanly through the knee and hem, giving it a simple, easy line that works day to day.

Cut from slub dobby cotton, it wears lighter and airier than the more structured canvas styles. If you want the most straightforward fit of the three, this is probably it – comfortable, uncomplicated and easy to wear day to day. Prefer the same general idea in a sturdier all-season fabric? Take a look at the Fundamentals House Trouser, also available in Sand, Brown and Green.

Trouser terms, explained

Rise
How high the trouser sits on the body. A higher rise usually means more coverage through the waist and seat.
Straight leg
A leg shape that falls fairly evenly from thigh to hem, without a strong taper.
Taper
A trouser that narrows towards the hem. Some tapers are subtle; others are more pronounced.
Pleats
Folds at the front of the trouser that add shape and ease through the waist and thigh.
Cropped length
A shorter trouser length designed to finish above a full break, often to emphasise shape at the hem.
Drawstring waist
An elasticated waist with a cord adjustment. Usually the easiest and most forgiving fit to wear.
